Ferries del Caribe's Kydon (still apparently on long term charter from ANEK, now presumably Attica) under refit.

A quick tour of the ship. She looks essentially unchanged from her second ANEK incarnation.

(The ship was built as the Hestia for Highashi Nihon in 1990, came to ANEK in Greece for Adriatic service as the Sophocles Venizelos in 1999, for which she got a first rebuild. She was later chartered to South Korean operators as the Elizabeth L in 2012 before being reclaimed by ANEK for unpaid bills in 2013. She was then renamed Kydon and further rebuilt/refurbished in line with her sister the Blue Galaxy for use on the Cretan routes before being chartered out to Ferries del Caribe in 2017).

The Kydon, which Attica acquired with ANEK Lines and is on long-term charter to Ferries Del Caribe, is on her way back to Europe. I'm guessing this is for overhaul but her operators have said nothing publicly. The ship has been out of service for several weeks leading to some speculation and consternation. She currently reappears in their booking engine in early June.

It will be remembered that Balearia are planning on opening up a parallel, shorter, route between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic later this year.

The ship remains at Campamento.

Nikos on Shipfriends has identified the following report which lists deficiencies which were identified by USCG in March in the inspection which precipitated the ship's withdrawal from service.

15109 - Maintenance of the ship and equipment
The company and the ship shall comply with the requirements of the International Safety Management Code. For the purpose of this regulation the requirements of the code shall be treated as mandatory.
The company should establish procedures to ensure that the ship is maintained in accordance with the provisions of the relevant rules and regulations established by the company. Specific measures for identifying, and promoting the reliability of the vessel's fire suppression system are not adequate. An external audit is recommended.

07109 - Fixed fire extinguishing installation
Each special category space shall be fitted with an approved fixed-pressure water-spraying system for manual operation which shall protect all parts of any deck and vehicle platform, if any, in such space.
During testing of the drencher system, PSC team discovered that the first three rows of fire zone one were inoperable, resulting in an inability to fight a fire in the associated sections of cargo deck 4. In zones 12 and 14, two ruptures were observed within the piping system, limiting the effectiveness of the water spray pattern and reducing the capability of the system. Also, during testing of the drencher system, the following nozzles were discovered to be clogged: Eight nozzles in zone two, three nozzles in zone three, 13 nozzles in zone four, one nozzle in zone five, two nozzles in zone six, two nozzles in zone eight, two nozzles in zone nine, one nozzle in zone ten, six nozzles in zone 11, three nozzles in zone 12, and five nozzles in zone 15.

The situation remains unchanged:

Kydon is still in Spain at Campamento.
Passenger services are suspended.
The Blue Wave Harmony continues to provide a low-key freight service between the ports.

According to the company's booking engine the Kydon is now due back very late June/early July, so a month later than previously suggested. Ferries del Caribe are very active on their social media channels, promoting their sports sponsorships and encouraging people to book for the summer etc. But they say nothing at all about the cancelled sailings or when their ship will return to service!
