Like so many vessels these days a 21st. Century 'Liberty' ship, but it looks interesting. Hope it is a better ship than Ben My Chree, only had one expedition to IoM but on that thing it was enough! Most of the stairways are too steep for civilian vessels, more akin to an RFA than a ferry, and passengers with dogs had to sit on a cramped half landing or outside. Not my idea of a nice ferry trip.

We are looking forward to the arrival and sailing to and from the Island. We have been using the IOM ferries for the last forty years and don't have a problem with Ben My Chree unless we get stuck in Heysham when sailings are cancelled. After all it's a short crossing - and quite happy to leave our dog in the car as most do.manxscorpio wrote: ↑17 Dec 2021 15:17 Like so many vessels these days a 21st. Manxman update - apparently without much ceremony she has been floated for the first time.

Latest update here, she's now afloat and largely painted.
June: Launching Manxman
Alas the company has spent millions on a new ship but doesn't appear to have employed professional designers to consult on livery application. Even some simple window shading, pulling the hull line up to a decent level and using less insipid text for the company's name would help improve the appearance of this ugly duckling. Softening the black used on the hull, as James Gardner did to the QE2, would also help.

Yes she does look a dumpy little thing doesn't she. She appears to be a stern-only loader, same as Ben My Chree? Also interesting to see her name painted on the stern itself rather than on the hull. I guess there's still plenty of time to improve the final product.

I think she looks pretty cool, to be honest.
Is the bow going to remain fully closed in?

Looks that way from the original renderings.

Here's a Steam Packet video which again shows how the low-painting of the hull lines serves to emphasise the ship's dumpiness.
Pulling the black up to an appropriate level would have given a stronger horizontal emphasis which would have offset the ship's necessary shortness. It reconfirms my view that it's just disappointingly sloppy, or non-existent, design work.

She does look like she might bob around a bit on the sea, given her shape.
She seems to have come along in no time at all though, highlights the deficiencies of another firm that sails in white and black further north too..

I think, paintwork notwithstanding, she looks a great little ship. Plus, as Tumnus has said, built in good time with seemingly little fuss. I hope she works well for the IoM.

We're all steam ahead on the progress of our new vessel, Manxman. Our very own James Royston, Fleet Operations Manager, is giving a talk about the project at 6pm today (13th October) at the Legion Hall in Douglas. Members of the Public are welcome to attend this event free of charge.
James has been vital in the project, managing the completion of Manxman alongside our team at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. The talk will consider the new build optimisation for efficiency and some details regarding the hybrid propulsion system.

First pictures from inside ?
There was a lot of things wished by the customers during the ordering / building process.
So i am awaiting that this ferry has very good public spaces inside.

Interesting details here of what was Cammell Laird's bid for the new IOMSP ship that ended up being built in China. A much better looking vessel than the thingy that's ended up being built that's for sure (helped by a professional and considered livery application, something the Steam Packet really could learn from).

South Korea, not China for this one. Confusing with so many being built in Asia now

I think I prefer the actual Manxman - especially as she exists

There aren't many internal renderings around for the Manxman, whose design is being co-ordinated by SMC Design.
Here are the three which, as far a I can see, have been publicly shared so far. All in all, it looks to be a big improvement on the rather "thrown-together"/underdesigned feel of the Ben-my-Chree.

Not an encouraging update: delivery is delayed and no specified timeframe.
Manxman’s delivery date delayed to ensure seaworthiness
31/1/2023
Testing carried out by Manxman’s builders during routine sea trials revealed a significant problem in the vessel’s systems. Additional work will be required to ensure Manxman is up to the rigorous specification set out by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. The works will be carried out by the contractors and shipyard that the Steam Packet Company has engaged to build the vessel. This will be followed by further sea trials.
These additional works will have an impact on the delivery timeline of the vessel to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company in South Korea and subsequently its arrival in Manx waters.
There will be no impact on existing or future bookings, all sailings will be carried out by the existing vessels in the Company’s fleet.
